Beginning in 2003, a group of ideal photojournalists, in order to improve the professional capabilities of Taiwan's photojournalism, planned to establish a highly professional organization, hoping to blaze a different path in the text-oriented media world.
On October 21, 2006, the Taiwan Photojournalism Research Association was formally established. The first "Taiwan Press Photo Contest" will be held by the Research Association in the following year. Upholding the principle of fairness, impartiality, and openness, there are no restrictions on qualifications and nationalities. Taking the World Press Photo Contest in the Netherlands as the reference object, it solicits entries from the whole country and the world. It is the first photography competition in Taiwan that focuses on professional photojournalism and is openly judged throughout the entire process. It has been held for 12 years, and has accumulated thousands of participants and nearly 10,000 wonderful works; through the release of the winning works of the competition and the follow-up exhibitions, publications and discussions, many valuable professional discussions have been established, which will continue to bring excitement and thinking to this circle. .
In 2018, it officially changed its name to "Taiwan Press Photo Association". In addition to continuing to hold the "Taiwan Press Photo Contest", we also look to the world to actively pay attention to the power of images. Although the operating funds of the association are still managed by meager membership fees and sponsorships, the domestic photography environment and education are not optimistic, and there is a gap with foreign countries. . However, with the participation of everyone in the "Taiwan Press Photo Contest", the efforts and dedication of people in the circle, the association actively and continuously organizes professional lectures and exhibition publications. We are still full of ambitions and hopes for the future.
